A Growing Church with A Family Feeling A History of Epworth United Methodist Chruch |
|||
EPWORTH
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (originally Epworth Methodist
Episcopal Church, South) was built in Williamson County in
1909. The church was formed as a result of the
consolidation of two earlier churches: Thomas and
North's Chapel. Many of the bricks and other
materials, including the curving chancel rail from Thomas
Church were used to build the sanctuary. Some furniture from these two churches are also still in use at Epworth today. The pulpit was brought from North's Chapel. The focal point on the concave back wall is a large gold-finished lighted cross. The beautiful stained glass windows are the crowning glory of the interior. Realizing that the church program was handicapped by lack of space, an enthusiastic Young Adult Class started an education building. Epworth continued to grow and in 1953 a parsonage was completed to ensure that the church have a full time pastor. In 1957 the men went to work again and dug out below the kitchen to build additional Sunday School rooms.
In 1987 the education wing was remodeled and an addition was completed. The new addition, like all of Epworth's building programs, was made possible in part by folks of our congregation sharing the fruits of their time, talents enthusiasm and hard work. Forty acres, one mile from our current property, was purchased in September 2000 for future growth. This land is already being used for a variety of church activities. In 2003 we paid for the property and construction was started on the new church in 2004. We are a growing church which places great emphasis on the Bible and Grace. We at Epworth would like to extend to you and your family a hearty invitation to come and worship with us whenever you have the opportunity. We think that you will find us to be a growing church with a family feeling! |
